Cedar vs. Composite Decking: What’s the Difference?

Planning a new deck for your Fort Wayne home starts with choosing the right material—but it doesn’t end there. At Amerifence, we’re not just your go-to provider for top-quality decking; we also offer professional installation to bring your vision to life. Whether you’re drawn to cedar or composite, our team handles every step, ensuring your deck is built to last and matches your lifestyle.

Natural Beauty and Character: Cedar Decking

Cedar has long been a favorite for its warm look, inviting aroma, and unique wood grain. This natural timber instantly adds character and charm to any outdoor space. Cedar decking is often chosen for its:

• Aesthetic appeal: The natural variations in color and grain create a one-of-a-kind deck.
• Cool surface: Cedar naturally stays cooler underfoot on hot summer days.
• Eco-friendly: As a renewable resource, cedar is a green choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.
• Workability: Our installers love cedar because it’s easy to cut and fasten, making custom designs seamless.

However, cedar does require regular care. To protect its beauty and prevent fading, staining, or warping, annual sealing or staining is recommended. Amerifence can advise you on the best maintenance practices after installation.

Low Maintenance and Lasting Strength: Composite Decking

Composite decking is engineered from a blend of wood fibers and recycled plastics, combining the best aspects of both materials. Amerifence installs composite decks that Fort Wayne homeowners appreciate for:

• Durability: Resistant to rot, insects, scratching, and staining, composite boards stand up to Fort Wayne’s toughest weather.
• Low maintenance: There’s no need for painting, sealing, or staining—just occasional cleaning with soap and water.
• Uniform appearance: Boards come in a variety of consistent colors and finishes, including wood-like textures.
• Longevity: Many composite decking brands offer warranties exceeding 20 years.

While composite decking typically has a higher upfront cost than cedar, its reduced maintenance needs can save you time and money in the long run. Plus, Amerifence’s expert installation ensures your deck looks stunning and performs for decades.

Which Decking Is Right for You?

Choosing between cedar and composite depends on your lifestyle and preferences. If you love the rich look and natural feel of real wood and don’t mind some upkeep, cedar could be perfect for you. If you prefer a deck that’s nearly maintenance-free and built to last, composite is an excellent option. Our trusted team at Amerifence installs both, guiding you from material selection to completed deck.
